The Westerly Public Library visited State Street School on Friday June 7th. They filled the students in on their exciting summer reading program. The FinCast was there to capture all the action and let you hear it straight form the dino's mouth!

Thanks to Ms. Grant for coordinating this informative visit! Children's Author Andrew Katz came to State Street School on Thursday May, 30th and visited with many groups of students. He talked about his imaginative book "How to Catch a Bear Who Love to Read" and read the book aloud. Students were given some insights into what it's like to be an author and even got some tips to enhance their own writing!

Each student created a poster board that included facts and a drawing of their person.....minus the face? Instead....a cut out to put their own face in...hence the Living Biography! 2nd grade was kind enough to present their work to the State Street community and share their knowledge. The Working Wonders program provides the youth of Westerly career exploration opportunities! Funded by a grant from the RI Dept of labor and training, the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce and Westerly Public schools are providing this unique program to expose students to different career options found in the state of RI. Offered to students in grades 4 through 8, students will learn about careers in hospitality and tourism, health sciences, agricultural and environmental, manufacturing as well as construction and landscaping. This time, we hear from people in the manufacturing industries. Get up to code with some web developers, hear the intricacies of working in a bank and hear about the inner working of Toray Plastics! Listen as the students learn about the RIDEM and their local offerings, a zoologist working with the Audubon Society of RI as well as a local oyster farmer. The unifying theme among all three presenters was pursuing something you are interested in, a great message for these young students as they look towards middle school and beyond.
